The Book: Surviving Signal 13

On September 17, 2025, a routine police investigation became an unimaginable tragedy.

At a rural property on Haar Road in York County, Pennsylvania, detectives from the Northern York County Regional Police Department walked into an ambush. Within minutes, three detectives were killed, two law enforcement officers were critically wounded, and the lives of an entire department, their families, and their community were forever changed.

Surviving Signal 13: From Horror to Healing tells the story of what happened—and, more importantly, what happened afterward.

Through three connected perspectives, Detective Jack Asper, Detective Zach Grey, and licensed clinical social worker Lisa Zoll take readers beyond the headlines and into the human experience of a critical incident. Jack recounts confronting the gunman, discovering his fallen friends, and providing lifesaving aid to the wounded. Zach shares his fight to survive after being shot and the long physical and emotional recovery that followed. Lisa offers the perspective of a mental health professional walking alongside the officers, families, and department as they confronted trauma, grief, survivor's guilt, and the difficult work of healing.

Their stories reveal that surviving a critical incident is only the beginning.

Through therapy, faith, family, peer support, remembrance, and the willingness to tell their stories, Jack and Zach began learning how to carry an experience that could never simply be left behind. Their journeys, and Lisa's work alongside them, helped shape Resilient Wellness—a framework for acknowledging what happened, processing the aftermath, navigating possibilities for healing and support, and adjusting as needed while learning to live forward with meaning, purpose, and honor.

Surviving Signal 13 is a story of courage and devastating loss, but it is also a story of connection, recovery, and hope. Written for first responders, their families, mental health professionals, and anyone who has faced an experience that divided life into before and after, it offers a powerful reminder:

We do not have to leave the past behind in order to live forward.
