Surviving Signal 13

(Signal 13 is a police radio code that means an officer is in need of urgent assistance)

THE CALL

On September 17, 2025, a gunman ambushed officers from the Northern York County Regional Police Department in North Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania. The shooting claimed the lives of three detectives. A fourth Northern York detective and a York County Sheriff’s Deputy were seriously wounded but survived the shootout.

THE HORROR

Early on September 17, officers secured an arrest warrant for the suspect following multiple incidents, including the alleged arson of his ex-girlfriend's vehicle and an encounter captured on a trail camera. When four plainclothes detectives approached the home on Haar Road, the suspect opened fire through the open door using a silencer-equipped, AR-15-style rifle. He was eventually shot and killed by Detective Asper who then provided life-saving first aid to the injured.

THE HEALING

Healing is not about forgetting what happened—it's about learning to live with the experience in a way that no longer controls your life. That process takes time. It doesn't erase what happened, but it helps us regain hope, strength, and the ability to move forward.
